Hi! This is my first blog article, so to inaugurate this section of my website I’d like to share with you my top 3 best practices for translators and their clients. Whether you have already entrusted a translator with your translation projects in the past or it’s the first time you look for a language professional, this short list will prove useful to understand what to expect from us and what we expect from you!
#1 Ask questions
It might seem obvious, but it’s really important that both the translator and the client are on the same page. The translator entrusted with your text should know about the project before starting to work on it, and you are allowed to ask them to clarify something should you have any doubts before, during or after the translation process.
Give the translator as much information as possible when you first reach out: the languages involved, the file format, your desired delivery date, etc. Also, remember to send to the translator – as soon as possible – all the relevant documents which might prove useful for the project. If you have style guides, reference material, similar texts or previous translations you would like us to see and use, please share them! It will help us do an even better job.
#2 Be available and reliable
Nobody should be open to work 24/7 and reply to e-mails at midnight, not you, not your freelance translator. But both parties are expected to reply within a reasonable time to ensure the best outcome. If a translator sends a clarification request to a client, it’s important they receive an answer as soon as possible in order to continue their work, especially if the deadline approaches. Conversely, a translator is expected to answer promptly to queries from clients and potential clients, otherwise next time they might decide to turn to another language expert.
#3 Nurture your professional relationships
Translators should meet their deadlines and deliver quality work. Of course, it might be necessary to ask for an extension from time to time, but it shouldn’t become a habit.
It’s also important for us to nurture the relationship with each client and to be honest about what we can or cannot do. We’ll let you know if we are unable to take on more jobs, and in this case, we might even go the extra mile and propose alternative solutions, like recommending you a colleague who is available and/or better suited for the task. Any help is usually greatly appreciated, right?
On the other hand, a client who respects our profession, settles promptly our invoices, and understands that a freelancer is by definition not their employee, is likely to become a translator’s ideal client, the sort of client with whom we would like to work on a regular basis.
As you can see, it’s a two-way relationship. That’s why we like to say that we collaborate with our clients to help them achieve their goals.
Therefore, the best way to ensure your translation project is a success is to establish good communication with your translator while also respecting their time and value.
